What Are Botox and Dermal Fillers?

At the Osteopathic Center for Healing in Rockville, MD, Jennifer Gularson, PA-C, IFMCP offers wrinkle relaxers (Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Xeomin and Jeuveau) and dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, RHA and Radiesse). Wrinkle relaxers soften lines from movement, like frown lines, forehead lines and crow's feet. Fillers restore volume in the cheeks, lips, under-eyes and around the mouth. Jennifer has over 20 years of injecting experience and teaches other injectors.

Options

Which Wrinkle Relaxers Do We Offer?

BotoxDysportDaxxifyXeominJeuveau

They all relax muscles but differ in how fast they kick in, how they spread and how long they last. Daxxify, for example, is FDA-approved for frown lines and can last up to six months for some people. Jennifer chooses the one that fits your face and your schedule.

Dermal Fillers

Where Can Fillers Go?

Cheeks

Lift and contour lost with age.

Lips

Soft shape and hydration, never overdone.

Under-Eyes

Less hollow, less tired looking.

Smile and Marionette Lines

Softer folds around the mouth.

Chin and Jawline

Better balance and definition.

Fine Lines

Very soft fillers for crepey areas around the lips.

Jennifer uses thicker fillers like Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft and RHA 4 where you need support, and softer ones like Volbella, Kysse and RHA 2 where you need movement.

The Number One Question

"Will I look frozen or overdone?"

No. Jennifer's style is conservative on purpose. She'd rather add a little at a follow-up than overdo it the first time. You'll still look like you, and your face will still move.

What Should You Expect?

1

Consultation

Jennifer looks at your face at rest and in motion, asks what bothers you and talks through options and cost.

2

Treatment

Wrinkle relaxers take about 10 to 15 minutes. Fillers take about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the areas. Ice or numbing cream keeps you comfortable, and most fillers also contain lidocaine.

3

Two-Week Check

For first-time patients, Jennifer checks your results and fine-tunes if needed.

Safety

Why Does Safety Matter With Injectables?

Fillers and toxins are safe in trained hands, and the training is what matters. Jennifer has deep knowledge of facial anatomy, uses careful technique to avoid blood vessels, and keeps hyaluronidase on hand. That's the enzyme that can dissolve hyaluronic acid filler if it ever needs adjusting.

Planning Around an Event
Wrinkle RelaxersAt least 2 weeks before
Fillers2 to 4 weeks before, to allow for any swelling or bruising
New to InjectablesCome in a month ahead so there's time for a touch-up

What Happens After Your Treatment?

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours after a wrinkle relaxer
  • Skip hard workouts, heat and alcohol for 24 hours
  • Don't rub or massage the area unless Jennifer tells you to
  • Expect mild swelling or bruising with fillers, usually gone within a week
  • Makeup is fine later that day

Who Should Wait

People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, people with certain nerve and muscle conditions, and anyone with an active skin infection in the area. Jennifer reviews your history at the consult.

Men Are Welcome Too

More men are getting subtle Botox and filler for a fresher, less tired look. The approach is the same: natural results that still look like you.

Questions

What Do People Ask About Botox and Fillers?

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Wrinkle relaxers are priced per unit and fillers per syringe. The amount depends on the areas and your goals, so Jennifer gives you an exact quote at your consult.

What's the Difference Between Botox, Dysport and Daxxify?

All three relax the muscles that cause lines. Dysport may kick in a little faster, and Daxxify may last longer for some people. Jennifer will recommend one based on your goals.

When Should I Start Botox?

There's no set age. Some people start in their late 20s or 30s to soften lines before they set in, and others start later. It's about your lines and your goals.

Can Filler Be Reversed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.

Does It Hurt?

Most people describe a quick pinch. We use ice or numbing cream, and many fillers contain lidocaine.

Will I Bruise?

Some people do, especially with fillers. Avoiding fish oil, alcohol and blood-thinning supplements for a few days beforehand can help, but don't stop prescribed medications without asking your doctor.

How Long Does It Last?

Wrinkle relaxers usually last 3 to 4 months. Fillers last 6 months to 2 years, depending on the product and area.
